How to Avoid Holiday Weight-Gain

The Omni Surgery Centre in Regina, Saskatchewan is one of Canada’s largest bariatric clinics. They’re highly trained lap band surgeons, dieticians and accredited ancillary staff is dedicated to helping people in and around Regina achieve weight loss in healthy, effective ways. But the holidays can be hard, with all the office parties, family get-togethers and catch-ups with friends to attend. The meals, deserts and drinks have a way of adding up. Don’t let the jolly season ruin the results of your weight reduction surgery this year. The Omni Surgery Centre is here to provide some tips for lap band patients and anyone else looking to avoid the dreaded holiday weight-gain.

1.    Exercise: It’s easy to give up on the gym during the holiday season – but why not step it up instead? If you’ve received lap band surgery, and you’ve become comfortable exercising at least 30 minutes a day, the holidays are a great time to challenge yourself to work out harder!

2.    Be proactive: Usually after experiencing weight loss surgery our dieticians help lap band patients get their eating habits back on track. Instead of saving up stomach space for the potluck, try to stick to three small meals a day with healthy snacks in between. You’ll find that if you eat proactively during the day you’ll be less likely to give in to tasty temptations at night.

3.    Eat wisely: Particularly after undergoing a laparoscopic stomach banding surgery, the nutritional content of what you eat is extremely important. If you’re going to bring a snack to the party, make it a vegetable tray or a fruit dessert. One of the most effective ways to keep your weight in line is to make sure the foods you eat are high in nutritional value, not empty calories.

4.    Alcohol: Did you know that the average glass of alcohol contains 150-200 calories? Try to limit your alcohol intake to 1-2 drinks per day. Lap band surgery patients are discouraged against drinking at all while eating meals. Try to have your drinks at least 30 minutes before or after eating.

5.    Socialize: Focus on friends and family, not food. After all, that’s the real spirit of the season.

Success Story

LAP-BAND® System Patient Rebecca, lost 110 lbs:

Most diet plans were too hard for me to stick to long term; I would lose weight but I always gained it back the minute I went off the plan. I felt isolated, and physically I had knee and back pain, chronic GERD and asthma. My father, a physician who had seen me struggle my whole life, told me about the LAP-BAND® System and encouraged me to look into it. I learned that if you are ready and willing to commit to a new lifestyle, then the LAP-BAND® is right for you.
