How To Determine if the Lap-Band® Surgery is right for you

Are you one of the many people who aren't feeling content with your weight? With so much media emphasis being put on looks, it's often difficult for people who aren't a size zero to feel like they fit in. A change in diet and an increase in physical activity is the way to go for most; but what happens if you're in the group of people who needs a little extra help? Omni Lap-Band® is a minimally invasive way to achieve your weight loss goals. Because there are a few medical considerations to take into account when contemplating weight loss surgery, first you need to find out whether or not you're a good candidate.

Medical Considerations

Before you can be cleared for weight reduction surgery, there are some medical considerations that need to be addressed. If you have any acquired or congenital defects in the gastrointestinal(GI) tract, potential upper GI bleeding conditions such as esophageal or gastric varices, portal hypertension, or deep vein thrombosis, then the Omni Lap-Band® may not be your best solution. Even though band surgery is not an invasive procedure, if you suffer from inflammatory diseases such as chronic pancreatitis, cirrhosis, Crohn's disease, some cardiopulmonary diseases, or inflammation of the intestinal tract you could be disqualified as a candidate for Lap-Band® surgery.

Minor Health Concerns

If you suffer from minor health issues such as hypertension or Type 2 Diabetes, you will still be considered for the Omni Lap-Band® procedure. Your Omni physician will be able to make the final determination based on your overall health and personal medical history. If you have any other minor health concerns, please make your physician aware.

Non-medical Criteria

There are a few minimal non-medical criteria that need to be satisfied before you will be considered a Lap-Band® candidate. If you have been more than 100 lbs overweight or have been overweight for more than 5 years, and have been unsuccessful at losing weight on other structured programs, you are a good candidate for Lap-Band®. If your BMI is over 35 with two other health-related issues, or have a BMI over 40 without other contributing factors, then the Omni Lap-Band® may be your best chance for successful weight reduction.

Success Story

LAP-BAND® System Patient Cyndi, lost 115 lbs:

At 291 lbs I feared my son would soon be embarrassed to have a severely overweight mom and maybe even start to resent me. Other sincere efforts to lose weight were not working and I knew I had to do something. I started looking into gastric bypass but was not impressed with the idea of having my insides rearranged. I chose the LAP-BAND® because it is minimally invasive and can be adjusted.
